Direct thermal labels for shipping, retail, food service, and logistics applications, stocked and ready to ship from LabelBasic.ca. Our direct thermal roll labels are sized for Zebra, Honeywell, Brother QL, and other direct thermal printers, with no ink, toner, or ribbon required.

How direct thermal printing works

Direct thermal printers use heat to activate leuco dye embedded in the label coating. As the print head passes over the label surface, the dye reacts and turns dark, producing barcodes and text without any consumable other than the label roll itself. This makes direct thermal the lowest-cost printing method per label for high-volume applications like shipping, receiving, and point-of-sale.

Common applications for direct thermal labels

Direct thermal labels are the standard choice for shipping labels (4″ x 6″ on 3″ core rolls), courier labels, warehouse bin labels, product tags, and food-service expiry labels. They are also widely used in healthcare for specimen and pharmacy labelling where a ribbon-free process reduces contamination risk. Because no ink or toner is needed, they suit any application where fast label changeover matters.

Direct thermal vs thermal transfer

Direct thermal is best for short-to-medium life applications: shipping labels used within days, or indoor labels not exposed to heat, UV light, or abrasion. When durability beyond 6 to 12 months is required, or when labels face sunlight or friction, thermal transfer labels with a wax or resin ribbon are the better choice.
