A privacy point no spec sheet lists: a used thermal transfer ribbon keeps a readable carbon copy of every label it printed, a real data exposure in regulated environments, and it has to be disposed of securely. Inkjet uses no ribbon, so there is no data trail.

What label material is best for medical device labels?
High Gloss Paper is the standard choice for medical device labels. The coated surface produces crisp, high-contrast barcodes and legible fine-print compliance text, including lot numbers, expiry dates, and reference numbers. Pigment-based inks bond cleanly to the coated surface, resisting smearing during handling. For devices exposed to sterilization agents, moisture, or chemical disinfectants, polypropylene label rolls are available for the same CW-C6000A and CW-C8000 printers.
What sizes are available for medical device labels?

Which printer is recommended for medical device labelling?

Can ColorWorks printers print UDI-compatible barcodes?
Yes. The ColorWorks series prints both 1D (Code 128, GS1-128) and 2D (DataMatrix, QR) barcodes at 1200 DPI resolution. The resulting barcodes are dense, high-contrast, and scannable with handheld and fixed-mount readers used in medical and laboratory environments. Can I print lot numbers, expiry dates, and serial numbers as variable data?
Yes. Variable data fields including lot/batch numbers, manufacturing and expiry dates, serial numbers, reference numbers, and operator IDs print in the same pass as graphics, colour coding, and barcodes. Label design software such as BarTender, NiceLabel, or ZPL-II templates handles variable data field substitution and connects to your existing production database or ERP system.
Are these labels durable enough for sterilized or chemically exposed devices?
High Gloss Paper labels resist routine handling, moisture, and short-term chemical exposure. For devices undergoing EtO sterilization, autoclave cycles, or prolonged disinfectant exposure, polypropylene label rolls provide a more durable synthetic substrate. Both materials print on the same CW-C6000A and CW-C8000 printers with no hardware change between runs. Is there a minimum order for medical device label rolls?
No. Label rolls are sold individually with no minimum order. You can order a single roll of 3″ x 1″, 4″ x 2″, or 4″ x 3″ labels and begin printing immediately. This is especially useful for specialty devices with small production volumes, clinical trial labelling, or prototype labelling where pre-printed minimums would create waste.
What label design software works with the ColorWorks printers?
The ColorWorks series is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux, and supports ZPL II for direct replacement of thermal printers already running BarTender or NiceLabel templates. BarTender is the most common choice for medical device environments requiring database connectivity, audit trails, and variable data management. NiceLabel is another strong option for regulated environments. Both work with existing label templates and connect to production databases without custom development.
Does the ink cost a lot per label?
No. According to Epson’s label cost guide, ink runs about 2 to 7 cents per label across the ColorWorks line, even for heavy full-colour designs. The blank label roll is usually the larger share of the per-label cost: the 3″ x 1″ specimen label above is roughly 2 cents of media per label. There is no print vendor markup and no minimum order.
Will barcodes stay scannable?
Yes. ColorWorks printers include Epson Nozzle Verification Technology, which automatically detects and cleans clogged nozzles so barcodes and UDI symbols stay readable, without a downstream barcode verifier. There is also no thermal printhead to wear down: worn thermal heads produce streaked, unscannable barcodes. The PrecisionCore printhead is engineered to last the life of the printer.
Should I choose gloss or matte black ink?
The black ink finish on the CW-C4000 and CW-C6000A is a one-time choice: it is set when the printer is first powered on and cannot be changed later. Choose the gloss model if you will ever print on glossy or synthetic media, or if you are unsure, since gloss black prints well on both matte and glossy stock. Choose matte only if you will always print on plain or matte paper. Both finishes use the same colour inks and both meet BS5609 durability on certified media.
What warranty and service coverage is included?
